Gas Fires

Types

Radiant/convector

Radiant/convector gas fire
  • BS 5871 Part1
  • Normally sit in front of the closure plate
  • The room is heated by either radiated heat or convected heat
  • Flue size - MIN 125mm
  • Ventilation is up to 7kW
  • The most popular type (open-flued model)
  • Efficiency is up to 70%
  • Modern fires do not have regulators
  • 20mbar - operating pressure
  • 60 seconds for valve to close down after flame failure (maximum 180 seconds)
  • Radiant convector with a built-in glass front - reduce the radiant heat but improve the overall efficiency
    • must have a built-in draught diverter

  • Radiants
    • Very fragile
    • Can withstand up to 1000°C
  • Burner
    Burner
    • Simplex - gas supplied by a single injector and controlled by a simple tap
    • Duplex - allows pair of radiants to be controlled to give low or high heat settings
  • Ignition Device
    • filament, battery or mains-powered
    • spark, piezo-electric
    • permanent pilot, to be found on older-type fires
      • Pilot assembly incorporates atmospheric sensing device ASD
        • Shuts down when CO2 level reaches 1.5 to 2% and CO reaches 200ppm
  • Room-sealed Wall Heater
    Room-sealed wall heater
    • No risk of any down-draught from a chimney
    • Flue size - MIN 65-75mm

Inset Live-Fuel Effect (ILFE) Gas Fire

Inset live-fuel effect (LFE) gas fire
  • BS 5871 Part2
  • Fully or partially inset into the builder's opening or fireplace recess
    • the chairbrick may need removal
  • Flue size - MIN 125mm
  • Ventilation is up to 7kW
  • Efficiency is 40-50% + convection chamber that helps to recover some heat

Decorative Fuel-effect (DFE)

Decorative fuel-effect (DFE) gas fire
  • BS 5871 Part3
  • Flue size is MIN 175mm
  • Ventilation is 100cm2 for appliances up to 20kW
  • Has a 35% efficiency
  • Increasingly popular for DFE fires to be fitted under canopy
    • independent canopy with supported edge

Independent Gas-fired Flueless Space Heater

  • BS5871:Part4:2007
  • Heat input up to 6kW
  • Not suitable for bathrooms and bedrooms or rooms less than 40cm3
  • 100% efficiency
  • Manufacturer's required permanent ventilation will be required
  • Can be a stove or inset fire
  • All types have glass panel

Condensing Gas Fires

Condensing gas fire
  • relies on a Fan Flue to entrain combustion air from the room through the heat exchanger and out through 28mm CPVC plastic flue pipe
    Fan Flue condensing gas fire
  • pressure switch - to shut down the burner in the event of fan failure
